4 - H  PROGRAM

Hope Haven offers a 4-H and Riding Program to a small number of young people who are able to make a long time (7 months) commitment.  4-H meetings begin in February each year and the commitment runs through August.

Through this program, each youth is provided with a horse that is primarily used by the 4-H member for the 4-H program.  The horse may be used for other purposes (therapy, lessons, etc.) when not being used by the 4-H member.

Hope Haven 4-H members attend 4-H meetings and events at Hendricks County Horse and Pony Club  at the Hendricks County Fair Grounds in Danville, IN or at the Putnam County Fair Ground in Greencastle, IN.   Each member must attend a stated number of meetings and complete their 4-H Project handbook in order to qualify for riding in the 4-H Fair Events.  4-H offers it's members meetings, workshops, clinics, horse shows and other activities.

Each member must learn how to properly care for an animal and must become self-sufficient.   This is an effective program in teaching  how to care for and budget for another live being.  Included in this package are four lessons per month during the show season, all 4-H materials and the lease of the animal for the member to be able to participate at the County Fair.  The horse is not shared with anyone else at the 4-H functions, shows or the County Fair.

Hope Haven provides the tack, show clothes and necessary equipment for the youth to show and participate in the horse shows and the County Fair.  Very minimal additional fees may occur such as gas for shipping animals and class fees at the horse shows, etc.

4-H and showing horses requires dedication, patience, responsibility and the willingness to learn.  Through obtaining these qualities, the youth in the program learn necessary life skills as well as pride in their accomplishments.  They learn to be responsible for their animals and learn how to handle some of their emotions.  They dedicate themselves to the riding lessons they are taught and apply them to the best of their ability in the show ring.  They are determined to learn the next steps of horsemanship, yet they understand that patience in learning each step properly is necessary to really excel in the show ring.

During 2010, Hope Haven worked with one member from Hendricks County 4-H and three members of Putnam County 4-H.
